The tale of resistance told by the Mannelli Tower isn’t one of revolution, it’s one of slowing down the shifting baseline. The baseline did keep shifting, less liberty for all and more power for the conquerors, but it shifted * slowly*, and many lives and rights sheltered behind that line. 19/?

If we define victory as preserving the republic, there’s no happy ending, the Medici won. But if their conquest started in 1430 and they still didn’t dare pierce a symbolic tower 130 years later, that is a lot of slowing the baseline compared to what Florence’s conquered neighbors endured. 20/?

Florence’s republic didn’t fall to the Medici only once, it kicked them out in 1433, in 1494, in 1512, in 1530, it took many conquests. But even when it *was* the worst case, the final fall, resistance kept Florence a place that with noticeably more liberty than its neighbors. 24/?

No one in Florence knew which republic was the last republic, not in 1430, 1478, 1494, 1512, or 1530, but they did know *all* resistance held the line and preserved liberties. @adapalmer Reminds of Palestinian resistance. Or Algerian, or Vietnamese. In the sense of the impossibility to defeat the invaders, but the capacity to survive and keep heads up for decades and even centuries.

By the way: is there any reference in your book to Al Andalus as predecessor of Renaissance by protecting and translating of Greek-Latin and Indo-Persian heritage for the rest of Europeans?

@davidsegarra More of the book is about the mythmaking of the Renaissance later, so 19th century things, modern historians, about why they claim the Renaissance was the first period to copy the classics and thus erased people like Al Andalus. So while I don't talk about the specific people they erased as much as those who did the erasing, the ideas are in there.

@lispi314 300 years of monarchy, first under local conquerors, then, when they died out, under the Hapsburg overlords, then the unification of Italy in the 1800s. When the unification armies came and drove out the Hapsburg governors, Florence re-established the republic finding the descendants of the last men who had been in the ruling council of the last republic, and had them gather as a new senate to vote to join the nation of Italy.

@adapalmer It is a partial victory (a mitigation of the harms, coping with rather than solving the problem), though it is unsatisfying. Potentially inspiring, though less satisfying than a fully successful resistance.

I'd say even just starving the Death Star of usable/quality fuel/supplies and having it (and the general sector) abandonned after an attempted occupation as a result would feel more like a victory (since it strictly is, it's a foiled/unsuccessful conquest).

@adapalmer So aren't we talking, realistically, about a slow defeat? Keeping the inevitable at bay for a bit. Don't get me wrong, it's better than nothing but it's still, ultimately, a bad ending. I'd far rather a victory.
