What to expect from #Trump:

@GottaLaff

“The government you elect is the government you deserve.”

― Thomas Jefferson

@Wileymiller I never agreed with that though. THEY elected him, THEY deserve him, we don’t.
@GottaLaff
It's still our government and now we are all going to suffer from it...unless you're a billionaire...because voters didn't turn out to prevent it, despite all dire warnings of what will happen. The sin of omission.
@Wileymiller Right. My point is we didn’t DESERVE it. THEY do.

@GottaLaff

I agree with that. THEY elected him so THEY get to suffer the consequences. Unfortunately, so do the rest of us who tried to warn them.

Never has the saying, "elections have consequences", been so clear and dire.

@GottaLaff @Wileymiller
I totally get that the Democrats are a mediocre alternative at best, I get the non voter, I get the 3rd party voter, but how do we have so many people vote for a man so stupid, he isn't even fluent in his native tongue?

@iamtheseedman @GottaLaff @Wileymiller

For a critical uninformed slice of the electorate, we failed to cut through the decades of dog-whistles and scapegoating with a compelling alternative story of who is responsible for the transfer of $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1%.

That story exists, we all need to learn it and tell a version of it at every opportunity.

Who is responsible? 70% Republicans, 30% Democrats. Imo

@iamtheseedman @GottaLaff @Wileymiller

We, and Democrats, are responsible for what we didn't get done.

MAGA Republicans are 100% responsible for their lies, the dog-whistles and scapegoating, but we have zero control over that.

We have complete control of what we ourselves do or don't do and influence over what Democrats writ large do.

I'd very much like to see us exercise that control and influence to do much better moving forward and will continue working to make that happen.

@Wileymiller @GottaLaff
The question is will any of those who voted for him wake up to whst they should have known all along, and if they do, will it be sufficient numbers to form a real resistance?
I think the first possible, but the second, if it happens, will be a replay of Syria's 50 year nightmare. Or Iran's current one. Key is control of military. Purported "checks and balances" are no more. A countercoup is our only hope to avoid the above, and THAT is fraught with similar risk.

@dbc3
This is a cult. Cult members don't turn on their cult leader. Some may wake up enough to leave the cult, but they do so quietly, being embarrassed they fell for the bullshit.

@GottaLaff

@GottaLaff @Wileymiller And there will absolutely be those who voted for him who will come to regret doing so — the likes of that lady in his first term whose illegal alien husband was deported and she was explaining that she thought Trump meant OTHER illegal aliens, which was why she voted for him — but yes, to your point, meanwhile, everyone who didn’t vote him has to deal with him, too.

@reay @Wileymiller Friendly reminder: “Illegal aliens” is a slur used by Republicans. Our government (under Biden) no longer uses that phrase.

People are not illegal, acts are.

Aliens otherizes them, dehumanizes them. They’re people.

@GottaLaff @reay

Thanks for pointing that out. "Illegal aliens", and worse, "illegals", is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. The sole purpose of this political framing is, as you pointed out, to dehumanize a group of people, mainly, people with brown skin. Repeating it only serves to legitimize it.

@Wileymiller @GottaLaff @reay I remember my son telling me that we were being invaded by aliens from outer space. When I questioned him about it he said he heard it on the news
@GottaLaff @Wileymiller Thanks for the correction.
@reay @Wileymiller Thank YOU for being so receptive
@GottaLaff @reay @Wileymiller
I also believe that these “illegals” include the 40% of undocumented people here who are LEGALLY awaiting asylum hearings. They are documented. They are legal. I’m scared that many of my students will stop coming to school.
@madrobin @reay @Wileymiller Exactly, MadRobin. Fear is part of the goal.
@GottaLaff @reay @Wileymiller I've ALWAYS used common sense and hoped my fellow Americans would as well. How can they be "illegal aliens" if they have crossed the border (not boarder) been accounted for. Placed on a bus and shipped to NYC by hot wheels. Given housing and stipends to live on until their status could be validated or not. Where is the illegal part? It's just a name to vilify them.
@kenshiro73 Points for correcting "boarder" @reay @Wileymiller
@GottaLaff @reay @Wileymiller And if I have it right for most of those they include, even their presence is not an illegal act.
@GottaLaff @Wileymiller
Yes! I am so tired of people saying “we deserve this.” Do the people who canvassed and phone banked deserve this? The people who stood up for democracy in ways big and small? No.
