Mastodon tries to do this, right? Aligning new users to an instance instead of to protocol, although the lesson learned seems to be that matching new users to instances is hard? That people (👀 ) should have multiple accounts on multiple instances as they learn and explore more? That people should use pixelfed for image narration and mastodon for news/text?

Mastodon tries to do this, but there is more work to do. There are no real tools to personalize instances or remind people where they are. It's non-trivial to, for example, change the logo that shows up on a mastodon server. Announcements are buried under a click. Instance-only communication is buried under "Life feeds" a couple of clicks down.
