Apparently ohshitgit.com is on the front page of hacker news again. I always HATE when that happens because the comments are from insufferable know-it-all’s who can’t conceive how anyone could be bad at git because “it’s so easy” like, my dude 3 million people over the last 8.5 years are proving you wrong!

@ksylor Reply guys and increased hosting bills, let's go!

(This is a joke)

@mahryekuh the great thing is that the site is a handful of static files (thanks @eleventy !) hosted in netlify’s free tier, I pay $9 a month to get analytics and then I make maybe $10 a month usually on ads, so I might get a few tens of dollars out of it lol!

@ksylor @mahryekuh @eleventy what do you do for ads? I’d like to be able to finance my writing — last year I served 1 million humans and I’m at 50k since January first. Donations aren’t cutting it.

I don’t want to embed google ads or whatever. Ideally I’d want to form direct relationships with advertisers but I haven’t been successful thus far.

@ksylor @mahryekuh @eleventy I’m thankful for the amount I’ve received via donations, and I’d continue to write even if there were no donations whatsoever, but with more income I’d be able to devote more time.
@eb I use a company called Carbon - carbonads.net tbh I initially didn’t have any ads on the site because google wouldn’t serve on a domain with swears. The team at Carbon reached out to me directly, and I liked their model so I went with it! My payouts are usually $10-$20 a month which covers hosting & a coffee or two.
