Saw a whole bunch of people out skating and doing hockey with kids on this pond the other day when I was driving home from my kid’s gymnastics gym, and I instantly became obsessed with it. Thinking about stopping by with skates after dropoff this evening, but I feel a little interlopey.
@jwschultz that is my neighborhood! I have no idea about the culture on that pond, I like to imagine everyone is welcome. I'll follow up with a DM, but you should also ping @samfirke who is doing some skating stuff

@george @jwschultz @samfirke It’s OUR neighborhood, George! Sheesh!

If anyone does drop by that pond and wants to come down the street to warm up after, ping me ;)

@timsaucer @jwschultz @samfirke I didn't want to dox too many people, considering I can identify like 5 people on this Mastodon server who are within walking distance of that pond.
@george @jwschultz @samfirke I’m a g-d social butterfly George! Or I want to be.

@jwschultz I want an ArborWiki page dedicated to skating ponds. I have found people to be welcoming at Thurston (it's massive) and Greenview (small) ponds. Thurston has people who shovel off rinks etc.

I went to Thurston tonight, one of my kids joined a 2v2 pickup game and the rest of us just roamed.

@george do you know if this pond in question is on HOA property or public right of way?

@samfirke @jwschultz the pond John highlighted is owned by the HOA but there is another pond that I believe is part of the DeVine Preserve: https://maps.app.goo.gl/D5D2hXwLje4izsFb7

@samfirke Greenview, like the frog pond right by Scio Church and 7th? I was wondering if that’s skateable, I can walk there!
Went to Thurston once a few years ago, seemed like an awesome scene. Was thinking I’d love to go there tomorrow if I weren’t spending the day with a 3-year-old who wants to play hockey but is a scaredy-cat
@jwschultz yep! Greenview is the closest pond to me too. I drove past 30 minutes ago and some guys were shoveling off a skating rink!

@samfirke @jwschultz @george

Sam if you want a start on #arborwiki skating ponds, you could do some edits to Thurston Pond

https://localwiki.org/ann-arbor/Thurston_Pond

Greenview Park is missing a page, but there is a "Friends of Greenview" referenced, which comes up with this

https://friendsofgreenview.org/frogmeadow/

also worthwhile calling out the danger of pond/river/lake ice, e.g. this recent sad story of a death of an Ann Arbor salon owner on Grass Lake
