My Data My Choice

As we welcome another wave of people fleeing toxic corporate
platforms, we are reminded what differentiates Mastodon is that it's not owned by anyone, and you own your own content.

What you post here is yours. It does not become the property of billionaires or venture capitalists to monetize, limit or otherwise manipulate. It's yours.

Yesterday in a great post about leaving corporate platforms (https://lgbtqia.space/@alice/113801225828650990), @alice nailed it: "My Data My Choice"

I deleted my #Twitter / #X account forever ago. I deleted my #Reddit account shortly after. A few days ago I messaged all the people I know on #WhatsApp to tell them I'd be deleting my account. A few minutes ago I deleted it and uninstalled the app. A few minutes ago I also requested a download of my #Facebook and #Instagram content (both have been locked down and unused for years). A few seconds ago I deleted both accounts. #LinkedIn comes out of the archive when I'm looking for work, and goes back in as soon as I get hired again. I'm strongly considering deleting that account as well, because fuck LinkedIn and #FuckCapitalism. --- So what am I doing in place of all these toxic, bullshit platforms? I'm glad you asked... #Mastodon, #Signal, #Matrix, #Proton (mail, drive), #Lovense (hey, it's a social platform πŸ˜‹). #MyDataMyChoice #DeleteMeta

@mastodonmigration @alice Also, my device my choice.

Masto is based on OPEN STANDARDS, so you can interact with it via web browser, or any app you choose to use or build yourself.

Compare and contrast with X/Insta/Threads

(yeah yeah bsky's AT protocol is open, we'll see how long it stays that way -- I expect they'll "embrace and extend", Microsoft-style)

@mastodonmigration @alice I agree with this sentiment, though the concept of data ownership here has some nuance. Me being on a single-user instance that I control, I have a high level of data autonomy, while others on say, mastodon.social are a little more limited (though they can still get a data archive of their stuff, delete posts, and be reasonably sure gargron isn't selling their data en-masse). The other point I'll make is that unfortunately it seems AI-related scrapers are already here (src: https://atomicpoet.org/notice/AprIgG3m36znUf8D20), vacuuming up public posts to train their models. So unfortunately, what you post here, your "data", might be monetized in some way without your consent.

These things said, the Fediverse is still the best place to be in the social world. Here's all the reasons (I think) why: https://shellsharks.com/notes/2023/11/16/hark-threaders-the-fediverse-is-good-for-you#why-mastodon--fediverse-is-good

Confirmed. ChatGPT is actively indexing the Fediverse, even small servers like mine who have not explicitly consented to their indexing. So while people on Mastodon got angry about Mastodon havin...
