risk of homes being destroyed by #wildfires within 30 years is 29% greater in communities designated by the US government as #disadvantaged than it is in less disadvantaged communities. At the same time, the rate of roof renewals is 28% lower. This also has an impact on future risks, because a new roof can reduce the risk of a residential building being destroyed by fire by up to 27%.

Social and economic disparities impact wildfire protection in California

An international team of researchers at the University of Freiburg and Stanford University investigated how social and economic disparities impact the ability of communities in California to protect themselves against wildfires. The study focused on roof renewals, one of the most effective but also most cost-intensive measures for making homes more resistant to fire. The researchers published their study on significant disparities in wildfire protection in the journal Nature Communications.

@rexi metal and tile roofs might be better than asphalt, for not burning?

@enobacon
#resiliency - yup

metal (nice metal, anyway) and ceramic are both safer and more expensive.

@rexi galvanized metal? I've got some old vinyl-coated aluminum (I think from the 70s), I'm not sure over cedar shake, where some screws missed the skip sheathing, if it's going to last much more than the original buyer's lifetime, or if there's much fire prevention ability. Standing seam over poly iso foam though, and no solar panel legs/gaps to hold burning wind-blown debris 🤔

@enobacon

there is no cheapest metal roofing. if you keep looking they just go to thinner and less forgiving metal alloys.

though I haven't gone shopping for any in a while...
