America has just certified an insurrectionist as its next president, in violation of the disqualification clause of the 14th amendment.

The failure to prosecute Trump for the January 6th insurrection is one of the greatest fuck-ups in American history.

The lost year: How Merrick Garland’s Justice Department ran out of time prosecuting Trump for January 6

Several months after the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, FBI investigators began pursuing a tantalizing tip suggesting that Donald Trump had possibly met with members of the Proud Boys, the far-right group that took part in some of the most brutal violence that day, people briefed on the investigation told CNN.

There's such a weird thing going on here: Democrats want a smooth election certification to demonstrate the contrast to 2021, but yet they're certifying the election of an insurrectionist.

I wish they were doing it while voicing reservations and saying things like "this is our minimal due diligence", but instead they did it with a smile. Everything's great!

@bascule it's a finger trap. Democrats want to show that democracy works smoothly, while their opponents want to tear it down. The voters went for the self-destruct button present in every democracy, by voting for the fascist. But you can't prevent the self-destruct button from working because to do so also destroys the democracy, by definition.

You're right though, at least they could smile less while going through the motions.

@aburka @bascule Dems might be smiling because they know that Trump voters will suffer disproportionately from Trump’s promised agenda. But that makes them sociopaths too.
@JustinDerrick @bascule I really think it's more just a (misguided) devotion to preserving the illusion of normality
@bascule If you keep acting like there's no problem, you're not going to get people to believe there's a problem, even if there really is one. It's not like the boy who cried 'Wolf;' it's like the boy who saw a wolf and didn't want to rock the boat.

@Subsaev @bascule They spent years (accurately) warning that Trump would end democracy; a modern Hitler; "not going back" etc; once elected they bent over backwards to ensure that Trump would return smoothly to power.

It's ironic and pathetic that doing the right thing requires handing the reins of power to a criminal.

@elronxenu @bascule True. However, it's either that or become a criminal yourself. This is what makes crime difficult to deal with and law hard to uphold. The law ultimately relies for its power on enough people believing in it to make life difficult for those few that don't. In this country that started deteriorating badly in the 1970s with Vietnam and Watergate. The poison legacy of Nixon who believed that the ends justify the means. And the country has never been the same since.
@bascule As usual, lazy Republican (and some Democrat) Senators are to blame https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/13/senate-democrats-impeachment-witnesses-468992
Inside Democrats' witness fiasco

The impeachment managers in Donald Trump's trial spent Friday night and Saturday morning wrestling with the question themselves.
