Cartoonist Ann Telnaes leaves WaPo after someone above her killed a cartoon - the first that's happened in 16 years, she says.

The cartoon shows a bunch of oligarchs kneeling before and handing sacks of money to #Trump

Why I'm quitting the Washington Post

Democracy can't function without a free press

@brianvastag Her boss is in that imagine and does not like it. If it didn’t come from the top then it came from someone shielding the top.
@SailorDisco @brianvastag I'm thinking she'd already made the decision to quit (and more power to her!), or she wouldn't have put him in the cartoon.

"As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable. For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post. I doubt my decision will cause much of a stir and that it will be dismissed because I’m just a cartoonist. But I will not stop holding truth to power through my cartooning, because as they say, “Democracy dies in darkness”."

@brianvastag She was not my favorite cartoonist, but she might be now. And this one is spot on. I started to cancel the WaPo when Bezos took over and they lured me back with a lower price. Now I will cancel fully.

> I doubt my decision will cause much of a stir.... because I’m just a cartoonist.

Golly. "Just"?

Cartoonists are the blade of satire. Fear them, despise them (maybe), but "dismiss" them? Not bloody likely in my world view!

@brianvastag

This is “Gleichschaltung”, a German term that historically refers to the process of “synchronization” or “bringing into line.”.

It is commonly associated with Nazi Germany, where it describes the systematic and forceful coordination of all institutions to align with Nazi ideology and policies.

@brianvastag I'd love to see a clever tech team reproduce this cartoon in light and images projected on a building in a public place in, ummm, maybe Washington or NYC. I'd love to see this cartoon reproduced with such ubiquity that it becomes iconic.
@brianvastag
Someone's feelings were hurt by seeing a cartoon. It must have hit home.
Well done Ann Telnaes.

@brianvastag Telnaes drew a cartoon that conveys a point instantly recognizable by Americans, a cartoon that works because it shows what Americans are already thinking.

Well done to Telnaes for maintaining her integrity while her employers throw theirs away.

@brianvastag and WaPo editor says the reason for nixing it was that there was already so much content with the same message over the last few days, this cartoon would have been repetitive

If Peskov ever loses his job, the WaPo editor can step right in -- he has the qualifications

@brianvastag
Democracy dies in darkness.
Here is your blindfold.
