This is the faulty encoder I removed from my Elecraft KX3. I know it looks ugly but I had no choice but to cut the pins to remove it. Tried a de-soldering kit that supposed to keep multiple soldering spots in a liquid state long enough to remove the component but it did not work for me... In the end the replacement was soldered rather nicely. I have no picture as I was eager to try it as soon as possible... The radio is working again!
@ve3nkl that's how I was taught to remove dead parts from PCBs... back in 1980. This nice lady Janice told me to cut the pins off, then unsolder the pins individually. Admittedly this was all .100" ICs on multi layer boards, stuff is a lot smaller these days.
@n1kdo Yes, this is why I need to invest in a mini cutter, mine is too bulky for some spots... It might not be long until I need to do it again with another encoder in KX3. There are 4 of them and they all are mechanical encoders...
@ve3nkl I do love my KX3. It does not get a whole lot of use; I mostly use it for camping and sometimes take it traveling. Hopefully I will not be replacing those encoders any time soon. I did replace the VFO encoder quite a while ago, I think it plugged in. Don't remember for sure.
