A gut #Shabbos.

Is this racist or just not PC?

@blumenberg

Modi isn't being racist. That's just being funny.

I posted him doing a nearly identical set of bits over a year ago. :)

@serge @blumenberg interesting. I thought it was pretty boring. But I guess as an ex catholic I might lack insight to get the jokes.

@jnfrd

Have you been to Ashkenazi shabbat dinners? Have you been to Sephardi ones? It's pretty spot on!

@blumenberg

@serge @blumenberg no. Sadly not. That’s what I mean. I lack knowledge for the jokes.

@serge @jnfrd I've been to ashkenazi and sephardim and what Modi describes isn't my experience at all. It's more between orthodox and conservative/liberal. Not only the duration but the passion too – at least regarding the rituals/tseremonye.

Ps. My grandfather was conservative, but coming from an (ashkenazi) orthodox shtetl community, and when he retired he became orthodox/frumm again. No erev shabbos less than 3 hours. No erev pessach less than 6 hours.

@blumenberg @serge my first, probably very ignorant, thought was: a northern dude cracks jokes about the lively southerners. Just with a vocabulary I’m not used too.

But again. I’ll just trust your opinions more than mine here.

@jnfrd

No, not at all this. Also he's not making fun of just Sephardim. He's also making fun of Ashkenazim, which he does a lot.

Comedian Modi on Ashkenazi vs Sephardic Shabbat Shalom

@serge @blumenberg ok. Making fun of everyone is something I dig.
Ashkenazic VS Sephardic (1)

YouTube

@serge @blumenberg interesting would be a better description.

With the exception of the Schmalz Hering. That’s funny Because it sounds German but means something different. ;)

@serge @jnfrd No, not at all. But I wouldn’t say it’s funny either. It’s interesting … and not accurate: it shows the different ritual traditions in Israel from two (religious unspecified) congregations but doesn’t reflect or mention the religious differences between Orthodox, Conservative/Masorti and Liberal /Reform Judaism – not to mention the regional differences, eg. Israel vs. Germany vs. USA vs. other regions, in the rites and traditions.

And Sephardim, like the Ashkenazim and all the other «flavors»/communities of Judaism, aren’t homogeneous, there are so many different traditions even between eg. US-Ashkenazim Conservatives and German-Ashkenazim Conservatives or Israel-Ashkenazim Conservatives … therefore the Video («Ashkenazic VS Sephardic (1)») is a simplification from a singular POV.

@serge I didn’t meant that he’s maybe racist by making fun of the Ashkenazi and the Sephardim, I meant the «rice and beans» part at 03:46: «[…] if you marry a Sephardic guy, on Passover you can eat rice and beans. You could have married a Mexican. […] They never mention that the kids all come out with one eyebrow. […]»

@blumenberg

Oh yeah. That part wasn't funny and gave me the creeps too.
