If you remember a time when the Internet seemed to hold limitless promise and are now wondering why everything digital you use is craptacular, strap in. This is gonna take a while.

Never Forgive Them

In the last year, I’ve spent about 200,000 words on a kind of personal journey where I’ve tried again and again to work out why everything digital feels so broken, and why it seems to keep getting worse, despite what tech’s “brightest” minds might promise. More

@Soozcat I keep seeing this posted. I'm gonna sit down and read it
@Soozcat @krusynth there’s a certain irony to reading this on a site that uses a popover to try and get me to sign-up for the email newsletter while I started reading 🫠
If you think you’re not this stupid, you are privileged and need to have more solidarity with your fellow human beings.
Indeed...
Everything is bad
Everything is bad
Everything is bad
Everything is bad
Everything is bad
He sure uses a lot of words to say "everything is bad" over and over again. My eyes glazed over, so I skimmed to the bottom, where he says:
You talking about (bad things) will change things!
Well he sure thinks so!
I can tell you is that you can live your life with a greater understanding of the incentives of those who control the internet and have made your digital lives worse as a means of making themselves rich. I can tell you to live with more empathy, understanding and clarity into the reasons that people around you might be angry at their circumstances, as even those unrelated to technology are made worse by exploitative, abusive and pernicious digital manipulation.
refusing to go quietly, refusing to slurp down the slop willingly or pleasantly — is enough. The conversations are getting louder. The anger is getting too hard to ignore. These companies will be forced to change through public pressure and the knowledge of their deeds.
OK finally some good stuff. Wait...
Holding these people to a higher standard at scale is what brings about change.
HAHAHAHAHAHA sorry I had to excuse myself to the other room for a second. ....HAHAAHAHA

Removing these people from power is what brings about change, you poor corporate simp.
You deserve better than they’ve given you. You deserve better than I’ve given you, which is why I’m going to work even harder in 2025. Thank you, as ever, for your time.
Good luck, whoever you are! Maybe start by not taking their position of power for granted! We need a system of dismantling hierarchies, not leaving them in power and trying to force them all to play nice. Also STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW BAD IT IS OVER AND OVER AGAIN I get it I know you're mad, just—briefly say what's going on, finish, then start talking about solutions, however foolish.

@cy Ok, thanks so much for crapping on this piece. It clearly wasn't meant for you. Have a pleasant Christmas!
You haven't even seen me crapping on something! That was me being nice! o.o

It's great that he said "I can tell you to live with more empathy, understanding and clarity into the reasons that people around you might be angry at their circumstances."
