Seems automatic silence removers have become really prevalent in #podcasting. It really stresses me the fuck out and my immediate reaction when I hear it is that I want to turn the damn thing off.

I’m listening to a podcast. I can do something else while I’m listening. I’m not in a hurry!

Something tells me that whoever “perfected” this technology is the same person that can aimlessly scroll TikTok for two hours without having a seizure.
@mikael Yeah, it’s a little gnarly. There’s a laundry list of weird podcast playback stuff, but silence removal is right near the top. When I edit dialogue, I proportionally scale silence to the vocal cadence of the speaker, but I never remove it entirely. It feels somehow worse than increasing playback rate. I think of it about as silly as offering the option to play back 5/4 music in 4/4. Especially on podcasts that either experiment with form, or use suspense as a narrative device. Terrible.
