...and and whether, in pursuit of better social media, we might want to dream bigger
@jomc joanne this is lovely, *and* i needed to read this today. thank you.
@jomc “What is content anyway, and why should we post it or look at it?” is something I feel like I need to ask every person in my life while shaking them by the shoulders.
@jomc Being compatible with ActivityPub doesn't make 2 instances of 2 services compatible. AP doesn't provide any way for 2 applications to understansd each other, just how to send data for now 8 years. No Pixelfed user can talk or comment with an image or a text a peertube video, they don't know even how to. And both are using AP. You don't talk about this fragmentation, are there any reason ?
@jomc Decentralisation is about distribution of power. When one admin shutdown authoritatively his instance, first, he shouldn't without other third parties approval and user are not armed because of decentralisation itself. But is that reality ? How decentralised mastodon.social (the largest server yet) ? How users would get along with their account in this decentralised network ? ActivityPub federates servers and doesn't decentralise power, afaik.
@jomc This captures my thoughts exactly! Lots of people I used to follow on twitter have jumped ship to be on bluesky and I've been resisting following them because why would I re-enact the whole song and dance of twitter, which, even before Elon took over, was already considered a bad place to be (ironically and unironically) by many users?
@jomc thanks for writing this. I'm friends with the bluesky folks and think it's not a stretch to make it more "free", but I've been pretty disheartened with the eagerness that artists and journalists have flocked to another (for the moment) walled(-ish) garden. Voices like yours on this are so important. ❤️
@blaine thank you, Blaine! Coming from you, that means a lot
