Spending today fighting with my new Samsung galaxy tab & my Linux PC to get Lineage OS shoehorned in.
Break for late lunch after frying my brain reading through then instructions & looking for Odin alternative (found one 🤞).

The battle will commence after the army is good & fed.

Progress is shit. I'd downloaded a MAC flasher instead of the Linux one.
I looked at the options on the site they linked to & it's Heimdall 1.4.1 & I need to download two separate packages front end & backend but no clue as to which ones are what in the list of versions.

Pulling my hair out as there seems to be no option for Linux mint. Having a browse on their forum now, on the off chance.
This is why, as much as I love them, I absolutely hate custom ROMs (yes, I know it's the big companies/device manufacturers who cause this headache) but how awesome should it be to have an existing tool that can do the job rather than, here compile this random pile of code & vague instructions 🤷.
Too complicated for someone who isn't (borderline) into coding or building or compiling from scratch. I'm just a lay user. Finger 🤞 I figure something out.

Welp, Heimdall won't compile or whatever. Got as far the (& including) the cmake command on here
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1516136&hilit=heimdall#p1516136, (updated GitLab to GitHub).
Make command apparently doesn't exist so I frelled it by moving on & got sweet FA.
Found a way to supposedly install the 'make' command & it seemed to work but trying it again as per ⬆️ link it didn't like it & lots of nope (red text) about compatibilty & not finding libusb. 🤯😕

Final attempt & downloaded Thor & Galaxy Flasher & all fine just apparently stuff is missing.
Installing Flasher as Flatpak but does it (or my Linux) have what it needs 🤷, apprently not.
I need:
You need to install glib-compile-resources to use this script.
Is what it say.
A dead end or an easy fix?

Sensible says, quit before I break LM (currently my only PC so very difficult to fix/create new pendrive to real-install & I'm really not in the mode (no spoons, dice, etc).

Have looked on Linux Mint forum as well as a browser search for anything helpful & it looks like a dead end for me.

@Soldusty at some point it is easier to visit a friend with a windows PC.

@Kurt
That has been percolating through my mind. I did consider digging up my long neglected Surface but can I find the little prick? Nope, charger & adapter yes but the thing itself, nope 🤣.

I'm going to have to leave it for now & reinstall Linux on my laptop as like a moron I've forgotten my password 🤦.
(Edit: Then I can at least lug that beast with me when I go away for xmas.)
That I can handle but on another day as it's nearly 18:30 here.

@Soldusty mabye wine will work? I'm not sure how wine will react to usb connections but its worth a try
@nekocake
I really want to keep things simple (elephant in the room), wine would just F me up if something goes sideways.

@nekocake
Same page but thanks though 😀.

@Soldusty ah! sorry! I'm new here and I'm just trying my best to help lol

good luck on installing lineage on to your tablet :D

@nekocake
No worries & thanks 😃. Just wish this stuff wasn't necessary or so stressful 😅.
@Soldusty if you are open to trying an alternative custom rom, #grapheneos do try and make their installation user-friendly with an online web installer https://grapheneos.org/install/web
GrapheneOS web installer

Web-based installer for GrapheneOS, a security and privacy focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.

GrapheneOS

@frumbly
The problem is, do they have a version compatible with my specific tablet? Probably not but will have a look as I can switch to doing that if they do & if I like the but of graphene OS's jib.

Edit: just checked & they only support Pixel & Google devices.

@Soldusty  sorry about that. I'll buy a myself a KitKat if you do manage to get the custom rom working.
@frumbly @Soldusty we are talking about a samsung device. Still not found out which one exactly.
@Kurt @frumbly
It's a Galaxy Tab S5e SM-T720
Think I've located a thread with straight forward copy paste instructs for Heimdall. Would be sorted by now if my Mam hadn't interrupted with a phone call but, now I can get it done & hopefully eat Lineage OS for tea at around supper time 😟🤞😅.
