Taking a photo is only half the job. The other half is editing them. Join me on a visit to Gompas in the Annapurna Ranges and a chat about the creative potential and learning potential when editing your RAW files.

Taking a photo is only half the job

People are leaving comments on the video that take longer than the video. What is happening today?
@ewen start of Christmas vacation? At least, for me. But I spared you the comments 😂 Have a good weekend!
@ewen
Wonderful piece, Ewan. I’ve been fortunate enough to have found you early in my Mastodon experience and have appreciated your work, insights and keeping up with your unfolding story. You have a keen eye for the beauty of the world. Keep up the tremendous work.

@Fernhead

That's so very kind of you 🤍

Thanks for coming along on my journey too :)

@ewen lovely shot of the monk. I look forward to watching the video.
@ewen Beautiful images as usual Ewen and as I’m currently on a photo catalogue cull, some timely advice!

@ewen Excellent video Ewen... full of rich imagery.

I'm reminded also of an earlier video of yours where you make the point that portraiture is best when it includes the context of the surroundings.

@BobHorowitz

Thankyou Bob!

I do love a bit of context in portraits. I love to get a little of the story. When I first got started on my photography career I was bemused somewhat that people regarded me as "well known" for my portraits. It seems I was doing something that others were not, which came as a surprise to me.

@ewen This is really nice, I love your photos.

I only wish you went into more details on the editing. I've been capturing raw images on my Canon DSLR for quite some time since I understand the avantages but never really bothered editing them, partly because I never brought a laptop with me and I never even looked for a good editor for them.

I do some selection and cleanups though, but mostly using the DSLR itself.

It would be nice to hear more about the software you use and your process...

@dermoth

This series of videos are short vlogs about my current thoughts only. I've done more detailed videos before on processing techniques, such as for auroras, b+w, and my monks in Nepal video. They're all on the channel too.

Years ago I also made a few videos that walk through my processing from shooting birds. There's a few of those video still on my website...

Walk With Me

Ewen Bell walks through a series of photos, taken while walking local parks with camera in hand. Each video reveals insights into processing those images as well as insights into the experience of capturing them. Birds and flowers will be the main focus for this series. Ewen wants to share the joy of taking a camera for a walk in the park and making beautiful images along the way.
