Fund this, climate philanthropy. And scale it up each year. DOE or another agency/philanthropy should support a program that asked "how do we drive down costs in heat pump installations" and then went out and installed 100, measured performance, made improvements, then did 1000, etc. Would be huge.

I have a proposal in review that would let us get heat pumps direct from manufacturers and install them in 100ish homes, installed by our technicians with all costs documented. The project wouldn't be about this primarily, but I'm REALLY interested to see how much heat pump installs actually costs.

This is how the Danish government advanced energy innovation in designing what would become the dominant wind turbine design. This is also what I talked about on stage at #Deploy24. That there is a missing middle in US clean energy innovation activity: building a bunch of small/pilot activities (in LDES, CDR, reconductoring, industrial, geotherm) in the $5-$200M range, & sensor everything as innovation learning projects.

Part of this was the subject of my dissertation a bunch of years ago but last year in the USG I made an action plan for accelerating energy innovation across DOE if climate philanthropy wants to fund that too, would be cool
