Mastodon is made up entirely of users who are afraid that some harmless and optional gimmick like #Wrapstodon will suddenly turn everyone, including themselves, into toxic clout chasers.
@zichy I might not think any specific gimmick is particularly harmful yet I can see the damage it does to culture… Maybe the world is more nuanced than you think?
What exactly does the damage look like? Mastodon is just another social network that already publicly displays the numbers of boosts, favs and followers. I would argue that nothing about the “culture” changes. We’re not talking about “your business could have reached a larger audience with sponsored posts”. Although there is some room for improvement, I see Wrapstodon as a wholesome way to make alternative social media more visible.

In addition, I really don’t know which people might be negatively affected by this. Who sees their 2024 post count and thinks “Oh, right, I’ll have to use nasty tactics next year to make my account more visible against the will of others”? How would this even work?

An annual Wrapstodon isn’t the first place people will see their stats. We’re all already part of a network that could give you a dopamine rush when a number goes up—if that’s your thing.
