Happy Buy Nothing Day! Today I had to work, but for #buynothingday 20 years ago my friends and I did an NVDA at a local mall. We set up a free store in the mall's food court, we each had a box of toys, accessories, books etc. to give away for free.

We wore Santa hats and some of us distributed a single-page comic we made advocating to make this year a "Buy Nothing Christmas", also the text of a banner dropped from the mall roof.

We got kicked out, one of us got assaulted by a security guard.

I've only included a part clipping of the article because I don't own the rights.

We made the local paper, the London Free Press the next day. I also ended up being interviewed on a radio talk show syndicated on the Corus network but I can't remember the names of the show or hosts anymore.

@tarek , who got assaulted by the security guard that day, went on to become a physician and start https://glia.org/ which is pretty cool!

Oh yeah, this is him: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/london-doctor-charged-again-with-same-alleged-ketchup-crime-at-mp-s-office-1.7385329

@jmcnaughton @tarek Very cool! I'm very much against consumerism, but I did need to buy an air purifier for my home because the air is garbage, and my current small ass filter does not do the trick.

There was a $100 rebate, and no taxes on top of that. Didn't buy on amazon though. Canadian Tire it was. Their new Triangle Rewards has literally this as a logo loll 🔻

@GM7077 @tarek

 Ahh, Crappy Tire. Almost every experience I have at CT is negative.

I wear a backpack, because I don't drive a car. Every single time I go to a CT they ask me to store my bag behind their counter.

It's my bag, everything in there is important to me. They don't have lockers or even a ticket system. How do I know they won't steal something, or give it to the wrong person?

CT is on my personal boycott list.

Shopping's so complicated lol.

@jmcnaughton @GM7077 💯 If anyone asks me to put my bookbag behind their counter, I say no and walk out. In places where I really don't want to leave, I usually challenge them and they often relent.
