@arstechnica Indigenous peoples from around many areas of the world had fish traps & shellfish gardens which were advanced engineering systems considering they were created before industrial age. Those early technologies helped Indigenous communities be sustainable with feeding themselves foods from the sea.
When the Europeans arrived they demanded that the indigenous people removed fish traps. In what became British Columbia this was the main source of food for indigenous people. They had maintained this sustainable fishery for millennia. Once "civilised" fishing was introduced, stocks collapsed - and still do!
