I don’t understand the math, but this remains (for me) the most entertaining open problem in science.

Massive Galaxies at High Redshift: we told you so

I was raised to believe that it was rude to tell people I told you so. Yet that’s pretty much the essence of the scientific method: we test hypotheses by making predictions, then checking to …

@timbray It’s certainly the most important unsolved problem in physics. MOND is a durable and remarkably successful model but it’s empirical. LCDM folks (the mainstream church) largely regard it as heretical. This news is interesting as it seems that JWST has blown a massive hole in LCDM orthodoxy, and thus the Standard Model of Cosmology which is also an empirical fit. So both are likely wrong and solving this problem will result in a paradigm shift.
@colinhayhurst I really enjoy McGaugh’s blog - obviously he’s a MOND partisan but seems to be rigorously fair and understand both sides of the argument. Clearly there are things out there that are consistent with neither LCDM nor MOND…
@timbray yeah, Stacy had been the most effective proponent for MOND and that has been super important as a bulwark against the church of LCDM. Have been following published works for ~20 years so should follow the blog too. thanks for the pointer
