Why is there a quote by a guy that loved arguing below it, kind of undermines the message.
Debating is not automatically an argument.
Not a fan of discouraging debate. It’s the best way for me to understand a perspective that differs from my own.
Learning to comprehend and entertain an idea that you don’t initially agree with is an essential step in appreciating the benefits of debate.
Debate and arguing are two separate things. Unfortunately on the internet the former usually quickly descend into the latter.
That’s true. I find people use them interchangeably, so I assumed the same from the meme. Good point.
I disagree that the premise is about “discouraging debate”… But I have no personal desire to debate the issue, so I’m walking away. Others are free to, I’m not discouraging it just because I don’t personally feel the need to debate the topic/perspective.
A couple dumb ass things here.
Number one, engaging with an opinion you don’t agree with is not the same as accepting it.
Number two, if Aristotle were alive today, he would probably alter this translation to not say educated, but enlightened or intelligent.
Because education is too broad of a term and can be more like brainwashing than actual enlightenment. Many educated people absolutely cannot entertain thoughts outside of the dogma they have been taught.
