Youtube algorithm correctly identified me as one of the few Canadians aware of exiled Indonesian composer and cellist Amir Pasaribu (1915–2010) --although I haven't searched him on there in some time--and recommended that I watch his son's playlist about him from his 99th birthday😭
I wrote his Wikipedia bio a few years ago because I have a soft spot for figures like him (progressive, modernist composers who don't fit into the music industry) and he's a distant relative of my best friend. for a very bright intellectual and groundbreaking composer it's a shame he spent most of his life in exile in Surinam and that his compositions are largely out of print.

I think I've shared it on here a while back but here's my favourite composition of his, Sriwijaya Variations (6 Variasi Sriwijaya, 1950).
