Been trying to avoid using more exotic and imported ingredients for incense, mostly trying to stick to things I can grow or source locally. So far it's been rosemary and lavender, but overall the smell of them is mostly just "smoke" when it's burned.

Anyone had any luck with other ingredients that are commonly found growing in North America?

@poweredbylemonx All I use as far is offerings is mugwort, ragwort ,not weed!, ragwort! Often grows freely as well at least around here.
They are considered invasive weeds here.
They're apparently also considered some damn offerings.
Ragwort can be irrevocably poisonous. You should definitely look up these plants and what they actually do. One of them will make you dream your balls off. If you're lucky, the other one is sort of like MDMA.
Again, beware and do your research when dealing with any new herbs.
If you mean just incense to burn, all I'll use is home grown white sage. Otherwise it's just some crap I found from it at the store for cheap, or a very specific incense for a very specific purpose that absolutely does not grow in my area.

@B_Whitewind I might look into getting mugwort I think. That sounds like I will need to do some more research.

Rosemary grows incredibly well in the PNW because of the weather. I don't even know if it goes dormant in the winter. The plants people have in their yards are enormous bushes that can get to be around 6ft in diameter and about 5ft high.

I use incense for ritual and for just day to to day, so I'm hoping to make nicer scents too. I might need to start getting western cedar or pine woods since those are trees that have more of a smell. Was also thinking of giving folks incense for gifts around holiday as a nice, handmade non consumer gift.

@poweredbylemonx cedar is my favorite thing. It takes all the willpower I have not to cut down every cedar tree in my yard and just huff that crap 24/7 😌
Mugwort spreads It spreads a lot. It will be all you have if you don't come up with a plan. I have never planted any because I heard that it would cause me problems. They're not many plants left from this Earth that can still manage to cause me problems *smiles*
Like good news. Yeah if it grows there it's going to grow and you won't have any problems running out ever again. When I'm done with the rest of this stuff out here I'll come back around to taking a look at that.
