After wearing my cargo pants yesterday and being spoiled by decent sized pockets (I could fit my phone in the front pocket, keys, and lipstick without it falling out when I sit) I’m pissed again about the pockets in my current pants, back pocket I can only put my hand up to my second knuckle in the back (might fit a lipstick but it would fall out) and the front ones, stuff keeps falling out when I sit. I’m going to lengthen the pockets based on the cargo pants pockets, I don’t care if it ‘ruins the line of the pants, and adds bulkiness’ because as I always say, women’s pockets, when pants have them, are bullshit. And I don’t care if they make me look fat because I value function and comfort more. My son can fit a whole keyboard in his. I’ve been gradually lengthening my pockets as I get to them, or wearing a Fanny pack, but had to go to a funeral Sunday and got pissed again about my pockets. I want to empower other women with decent pockets, so we can take over. That poem about seditious pockets comes to mind. Or at least carry phones and keys. Will post photos. #sewing #pockets #womenspants

Yes. I primarily sew because #pockets! Everything I sew has pockets and I've gone back and added 5x7" pockets to my knit garments with black jersey that I have on hand. On woven garments, I typically cut out 8x8" for the pockets so I can lay a phone in sideways (more secure. Placement of the pockets is important, as is depth so I keep experimenting with locations that will hold valuables secure when sitting or standing.

@EllenInEdmonton that’s amazing! I update my pockets when I can, but my sewing queue is pretty long so I haven’t gotten to all of my pants yet. Haven’t done much in knit garments yet…Today these just pissed me off enough to continue on my pocket project, put aside the bag I’m working on. I’ve been using fabric like canvas because I have plenty on hand, but should probably match the weight of the existing lining. . Thanks for the size references! I’ll save those. I’ve just been going by the pockets in my coveralls :-)

We all have particular pocket dimensions and locations that work best for our individual needs. I just sewed 2 dresses that have both patch pockets and side-seam pockets since I use them for different purposes. I like being able to rest my hands inside inseam pockets but patch pockets are easier for around home.
@EllenInEdmonton the other thing I’ve noticed is lighter linings like in my husbands rtw/manufactured shorts develop holes from carrying keys, tools, etc. I probably go too heavy weight wise but want to avoid fixing it again. Do you match the pocket lining weight to your garment fabric?
