The USB-IF/PCI-SIG couldn't really do anything if we just found an unallocated VID and set up a community org to manage PID assignments under it.

Because it's not like we're saying anyone can claim compliance, it's just saying "here, have a number",

Like, an OSHW numbering "authority". I don't think there is any recourse, legal or otherwise they could take if a bunch of us just went and got together to do that.

It's a decent solution, and yeah, it's less likely to have a VID conflict, but I dunno *shrug*
