Similar things happen all over the world and we can see a lot of people can't be trusted to handle power responsible and as consequence boost authoritarianism and environmental destructive egoism.
Democracy does need more checks so that "trust is nice but control is better" can work to prevent this.

@thejuicemedia That's actually a common strategy: Bundle some good changes together with the harmful crap you're trying to push, so if people want to vote against the harmful crap, you can allege loudly in the media that they're evil persons who against the good changes.
