Posted for no particular reason today: Hitler looking serious, wearing a business suit (no uniform, no swastika), meeting with President Hindenburg shortly after becoming chancellor on 30 January 1933. The German republic was handed over to a fascist authoritarian with the utmost civility.
@davmicrot Crazy light in this photo. My recollection is that Hindenburgh could have stopped Hitler's ascension but his advanced age made him less of a check on the chancellorship. Good thing we don't have any elder statesmen who tried to stay in power and ended up paving the way for fascism.

There were horrible economic problems in Germany at that time.Unemployment was 30% and Hitler only got 36% of the vote. America is Utopia compared to Germany in 1932 and yet ....
