@andrewstroehlein it’s as much horrifying as it’s unbelievable.
The proposal has provoked significant backlash from human rights groups, civil society organizations & sections of the Iraqi public.
It’s an amendment that’s part of a broader effort to change the law aimed at decentralization from the state to religious authorities - enabling the religious to set rules around marriage, divorce & inheritance based on Sharia interpretations.

@andrewstroehlein also, women's groups & some Iraqi lawmakers are mobilising against the amendment to maintain the current marriage age of 18. The issue has become a flashpoint in Iraqi society, highlighting divisions between conservative &
progressive factions & raising concerns about the long-term implications for the rights of Iraqi women & children.
