The studs in my walls are a rapidly shifting network. My stud finder is largely useless, but a magnet stud finder helps hold the stud in place long enough for me to get a screw in.

I get so many false readings from cheap stud finders.

In homes from the 70s and later I’ve used neodymium magnets to find the dry wall nails under the paint. The drywall installers knew where the studs were and the building code era defines their spacing.
