The local grass trees / Xanthorrhoea / black boys have sent up their flowering spike and the bees and birds are feeding on them.

It's this spear-like flowering stalk that had them for more than a century called "black boys".

A dismissive, belittling term.

But the term hid the terror of the early white colonists / invaders.

Perhaps near #Perth, Western Australia, the only frequently used-by-whites word from the local Aborigines was gidgie. Which means spear. We snorkelled with a gidgie.

No promises but I think it was at the shattering-of-bullshit-narratives site below that I read about the early retreat of the colonialists / settlers / invaders to Garden Island when the spearing got too much for them.
