@muskwalker The rough definition from my culinary training days was something along the lines of 'bite sized or smaller pieces with a dressing' and a dressing can be anything from a liquid to a semisolid.
Honestly I think the more helpful definition is that a salad must have a higher-than-usual acidic content balanced against whatever starches and proteins are in it. Many salads fail at this, which is the usual source of my disappointment.
