@arongergely @kirschner That was indeed a significant hurdle when I first started using Linux in the 90's. It was just assumed you could use vi and so that's what you were tossed into first thing.

OpenBSD was worse. It tossed you in with 'ed'.

Now my "IDE" is vim with some plugins inside a tux.
