What many need are affordable apartments - meaning get corporations and cartel algorithms out of the pricing, and start changing zoning rules that only allow for single-family dwellings. The house-boom idea leads to more sprawl, lowering quality of life (and we're running out of 'nature' as it is in suburbia).
Not everybody needs a house. They do need an affordable place to live near their work.
