@BrianJopek Jimmy had a terrific heartfelt monologue last night. These words will be prophetic.
" ...you just don't realize it yet"
@Barbramon1 @BrianJopek 💯.
When he choked up, I cried along with him. While I’m not typically prone to weeping, my tears are very close to the surface these days. Even so, that was heart-wrenching.
@Laloofah @BrianJopek I was literally laughing through my tears at certain points. Jimmy has become my favorite comedian. He is not only hilarious, but he is a genuine good man.
@Barbramon1 @BrianJopek Oh yes, he made us laugh quite a bit too — always does. Which is probably part of the reason why seeing him choke up hit me so hard.
And how we adore Cousin Micki! Was there ever a happier, sweeter, more good-natured soul on this planet? 😁
@Laloofah @Barbramon1 @BrianJopek If you’re talking about Jimmy Kimmel, I remember when he was just Jimmy The Sports Guy on Kevin & Bean. He’s the one who got Adam Corolla on the radio, during the “Bleeda in Reseda” boxing match between himself and Michael the Maintenance Man. My how the world has changed since then!
@Barbramon1 @Laloofah @BrianJopek Yeah, I rank them Kimmel #1, Colbert #2, Trevor Noah #3, Seth Meyers #4, Jon Stewart #5, Jimmy Fallon #6. Did I miss anyone?
@JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek
Kimmel is my number one, with Meyers and Colbert tied in second place.
II seldom watch Fallon or Stewart. Stewart's voice and manner irritate me, and Fallon is just not that funny.
Trevor Noah? I adore him but no longer think of him as a late night host. He is a brilliant stand up comedian.
Will be sad, but not surprised if Kimmel and Colbert retire from late night within a year or two when their contracts expire. They will be hard to replace.
@Barbramon1 @Laloofah @BrianJopek we largely agree: forgot John Oliver, who I would put ahead of Stewart, who too often disappoints me
@JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek
I was going to edit my post to include John Oliver.
His show is weekly, and its format is very different from the others. He's both brainy and hilarious, like a witty professor. I always learn something from him.
@Barbramon1 @JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek What the world needs now is for Craig Ferguson to come out of retirement.
@5teverin0 @JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek
I forgot about him. I wonder if he would take on a regular show. He is in his early 60s now, like Stewart and Colbert.
Hoping we see some really good younger comics coming through the pipeline
@Barbramon1 @JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek He's a naturalized US citizen and very happy about it (recent developments not withstanding). I imagine he is none too pleased with the goings on of late. Plus, he is, IMO, hands-down funnier than the rest.
@5teverin0 @Barbramon1 @JonChevreau @BrianJopek While he’s not a late-night/TV host (he’s a stand-up comic who also makes YT vids from inside his car!), I’d feel remiss if I didn’t add Trae Crowder (“The Liberal Redneck”).
This is his latest video, made in the immediate aftermath of the nightmare election. Shorter & angrier than his typical vids (understandably), but figure it’s a place to start…

Liberal Redneck - Reaction to Trump Victory

YouTube
@Laloofah @5teverin0 @Barbramon1 @BrianJopek Good stuff! Liberal Redneck nicely sums up the dire situation. Canifornia anyone? See Barry Gander’s substack about Smart America merging with Canada
@JonChevreau @5teverin0 @Barbramon1 @BrianJopek There’s been talk of a breakaway “Cascadia” for some time. Love their flag and the idea of being part of British Columbia without having to move!
@Laloofah @JonChevreau @5teverin0 @BrianJopek
Add California, and I would not have to pack either. Cascadia could definitely use California's economic power. We are the world's fifth largest
economy.🌞

@Barbramon1 @JonChevreau @5teverin0 @BrianJopek

I think it would be great!
I love this redesign of the Cascadia flag that someone created & then shared on Reddit, & agree with them that the colors & silhouette are more appealing.
And I really appreciate this contribution to the conversation that ensued…

@[email protected] @JonChevreau @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] There's been talk about a "breakaway Cascadia" for at least 50 years. Promoted by boring people unable to cope with the difficultiesof real life.
@Syncretic @Laloofah @5teverin0 @Barbramon1 @BrianJopek well it’s going to get a lot more difficult once Project 2025 ramps up
@JonChevreau @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] The only word I can think of that adequately predicts what the next 4 (plus?) years will be like is "chaos". Perhaps the safeguards of the republic will shield the Pacific states from most of it.
@Syncretic @Laloofah @JonChevreau @5teverin0 @BrianJopek
But yet you are reading this.
Your comment adds nothing of value to this conversation. Begone!

@Barbramon1 Kimmel is a gift.

Fallon helped Donald win in 2016. To hell with him.

@Gustodon
You are right, Gus. I'd forgotten that. Fallon can pound sand.
@Barbramon1 @Laloofah @BrianJopek I knew I forgot someone and a female comedian at that: The Daily Show’s Desi Lydic.
@JonChevreau @Laloofah @BrianJopek She is great! We could use more woman comedians. Bring back Samsntha Bee.
@Barbramon1 @Laloofah @BrianJopek me too. He makes me laugh about the ridiculousness & we need that. Not to make light of it all, but to keep our brains healthy & encourage us to live another day.
I also like Colbert, but Jimmy K helped me get over the hump of my dread.
@BrianJopek One can always hope that karma hits the Trumpers the hardest.
@BrianJopek While I hope karma comes back to bite them, remember that a federal court judge dismissed the classified documents case back in July, and I'm wondering if that might resume sometime soon. But no matter what the consequences are, the Justice Department has to wrap things up by January 20th because of the policy that they can't prosecute any sitting President. So I highly doubt there'll be any karma.
@chandlerkyle93 I think it’s more in reference to what happens with things like the tariffs and the impact on increased costs getting passed on to the consumer as well as efforts to kill programs like Social Security
@chandlerkyle93 @BrianJopek Nothing will happen!!!! Period. Oh and FUCK Garland!!

@chandlerkyle93 @BrianJopek The last I heard, Jack Smith was stopping the prosecution. He will get away with everything.

There is no such thing as justice.

@BrianJopek 🎯. I hope they all learn the hard way. I'm protecting myself and my family. Fuck them!
@BrianJopek And just like that, the US became the Mississippi of industrialized nations.
@BrianJopek
And it just occurred to me...when Trump dies this coming summer, JD Vance will be set to remain in office until 2035, because he was not elected POTUS and can run for office twice.
@Threadbane @BrianJopek Next summer? Do tell!
@JonChevreau @BrianJopek
I honestly didn't think he would be well enough to run. Actually, in a sane world, they would have put him in a facility for the criminally insane years ago.
@Threadbane @BrianJopek That's assuming the laws stay on the books as they are.
@janisf Amendment requires simultaneous 2/3+ agreement in both houses, followed by at least 3/4 of States (currently 38) ratifiying, usually within a deadline (7 years is common). That's not going to happen. The GOP would need 60+ Senate votes and they currently have only 53. They would also need 290+ House votes, and right now have only 211. They might pick up more, but it won't be enough. And there are definitely not 38 States willing to ratify it even if they did.

@Threadbane Actually, it would have to be 21 January 2027 or later. If a VP takes over less than halfway through an incumbent's term, then that counts as one whole term. (The law does not count partial terms, only whole, by rounding.) You're right about the ten years, if he takes over at least halfway through. But it must be at least that far. Otherwise, the best he can get is less than eight.

The same is true no matter WHY he steps in, only IF he does. So 25A wouldn't change this math.

@BrianJopek has there ever been an occasion where mainstream tv programs reacted to an election with devastation?

@BrianJopek

Stupidity is not a virtue…

@BrianJopek Very true... and if Harris had won the same statement would have been true about her. Thats the problem. This election was about if we wanted to starve and promote genocide, or have democracy be dismantled. Both choices were a loss.
@freemo Unlike the tRump win, though, had Harris pulled it off, there would at least be a shot to get a more serious effort to end the war in Gaza. Now, that’s gone; I’m seeing stories that are reporting with the tRump win, Netanyahu is now (or will be once tRump is back in there) pretty much free to do as he pleases. The whole Gaza situation is beyond repugnant; voting tRump in just guaranteed it’s now gonna go much longer with that many more people dying.

@BrianJopek The tariffs alone he proposed will make even his followers suffer intensely later on.

Let alone everything else he is planning... plus project 2025 too.

Might as well call satan and say, "America is coming to you."

(HELL!)

JIMMY KIMMEL ON THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR DONALD TRUMP:

“It was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him. And guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted FOR him, too. You just don't realize it yet."

@BrianJopek Found on my mostly-aimless internet wanderings today, this reminded me of Jimmy’s poignant final line…
@BrianJopek
This guy probably summed it up better than I ever could have.
@BrianJopek Jimmy Kimmel sounded like he was almost in tears when he was saying this.
@BrianJopek There was no winner in the presidential election. Everyone - indeed, every being - will be negatively affected, ultimately.
@BrianJopek True, but I'm afraid that he sounds like a lesson-giver to many....
@BrianJopek I really hope it will be truly horrific for the Trump/GOP voters.
Zero empathy towards those shitbags after nearly a decade of this utter evil nonsense.
