I'm slowly working my way through The Complete Works of H.P.Lovecraft. I bought the collection YEARS ago and read a handful of stories, then forgot about it. My goal is to get it done by my next bd which is in June. That should be enough.

The Whisperer in Darkness (1931)

Arkham University man travels to meet his penpal who lives out in the woods. He talks of strange, alien things and whispers in the dark that slowly drive people insane, promises of primordial horrors that try to reach across the universe and into our world, only to change his tune (and whole personality) to invite the university man for a visit. Who would’ve thunk the penpal had already succumbed to their nefarious plans and had been replaced by an alien (while the original penpal’s brain had been preserved in a tube)! Tbh this was a bit boring.

☣︎ Monster of the week:
Flying fungus-space-aliens that flew from across the universe (Yuggoth aka Pluto?) to dig precious metals they don’t have in their world or perhaps take over the world.

Pickman’s Model (1926)
A letter depicting the story of a genius if strange artist who was ostracized by the art circles due to his gruesome paintings. The letter-writer gets a private tour to Pickman’s cellar painting studio and his models for his gruesome paintings. Cool idea, boring execution. This blah-blah-blahtered for ages and Lovecraft’s typical SHOCK AND HORROR last sentence reveal could be seen miles away.
☣︎ Monster of the week: Monstrous underground rodent-beings

The Book (1933)
So this is a short story fragment only but boy would I like to read more. The narrator is given a strange book and falls prey to its dark temptation and does a ritual he shouldn’t have done.
