Apparently Republicans are losing their minds today about the fact that women have the right to vote for whomever they choose.

They are freaking out about this video ad featuring the voice of Julia Roberts.

It would be a shame if all the commotion just made the video go hugely viral.

Pass it on.

Julia Roberts Reminds Us - Your Vote, Your Choice

YouTube

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin
Thatโ€™s a great ad: the prominent flag imagery without trumps name

Makes everybody think twice about each person they see at his rallies now, and who theyโ€™re actually going to vote for

Beautiful

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin is this really what voting booths look like in the US?? Like a little D&D thing? You don't have fully closed cabinets?
(Yes this is not the topic I know, but I am just really surprised, although when you see what the US bathrooms look like I guess it makes sense - they also have no privacy)

@elduvelle @KamalaHarrisWin

In many places, yes.

Also our trains are shit, but our coffee is much better. ๐Ÿ˜†

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin hum.. Are you sure about that coffee statement ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@mastodonmigration sorry maybe it was a joke, I'm not getting those well these days ๐Ÿ˜…

@elduvelle

Oh yes. Just got back from France and Spain, and the one thing that you folks need to figure out is how to make a good cup of coffee. Not an espresso, or Americano mind you, a proper cup of Java. But otherwise, you rock!

@mastodonmigration I mean.. For me the espresso is the proper coffee.. Everything else is diluted!

@elduvelle

See now, that's what is so wrong about the European coffee experience. All you've got is espresso or espresso with water. Espresso is fine if you're in the mood for espresso, but Americanos are never OK, and a proper cup of coffee is something entirely different.

@elduvelle @mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin

This is not how any voting booth I've used was set up, but the more recent version - using paper ballots like in the ad - has featured those little cardboard privacy fences arrayed on folding tables. It's somewhat more private than in the ad, but not as private as a booth. More and more people vote with a mail-in ballot, so that actually afford domestic partners less privacy and even allow one spouse to vote both ballots.

@elduvelle @mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin
It varies from area to area. Locally, they are taller, but similar. I've seen some with drawn curtains.

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin Further on MAGA men losing their shit over the implication that they don't own their wives' votes:

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4964265-kamala-harris-ad-julia-roberts/

'โ€œIf I found out [my wife was] pulling the lever for Harris, thatโ€™s the same thing as having an affair,โ€ Fox News host Jesse Watters said on air Wednesday'

Yeah, well, if I were married to someone who thought he got to dictate how I should vote, I'd consider that an act of domestic abuse, so how about you sit with that a moment.

@NicoleJLeBoeuf @mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin
I'm wondering if women will lose the right to vote under a Trump/Vance "win". Given how freaked out they are that women might make their own choices.
(Honestly, between this and reading the SCP-8980 story, I felt compelled to go give my husband a hug. "What's this for?" "Just for being a good person. So many people aren't.")

@mastodonmigration Were they not aware of this fact until this ad was released?

I'm guessing some R men are going to be having some interesting conversations with their wives over the next few days.

Nice thought, but no: a billionaire(s) owns Google which owns YouTube which utterly controls the virality of everything, so with one word from a billionaire it can sink to the middle of rankings (not the bottom, lest that raise suspicions)

@VulcanTourist @KamalaHarrisWin

Probably you are right. Just googled Julia Roberts and top video is a Washington Examiner story about how awful the ad is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5i6ZuHZfRY

But, as they say, no publicity is bad publicity.

Julia Roberts under fire for ad inviting women to vote differently from husbands

YouTube

@VulcanTourist @KamalaHarrisWin

So, just watched this and trying to figure out what they are saying. Apparently in backward MAGA land, reminding women that they have agency of their own, and can make their own choices is degrading to women. So, it seems making it clear you expect them to vote how you tell them to is respectful. ๐Ÿค”

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin

I grew up in a Christian household (albeit one of the better ones but still fundamentally flawed). I've been aware of the Biblical justifications for patriarchy and more since I was a child. Why do you suppose that I'm an atheist?

@VulcanTourist @KamalaHarrisWin

This issue is fascinating because it drives right to the heart of core conflict in this election. White men are terrified that their patriarchal privileges are being taken away from them, and they are 100% right, they are, because they are illegitimate and unfair. Women making their own choice of who to vote for precisely targets that angst, and threatens to further hasten the demise of male privilege writ large. It drives them crazy.

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin

Well... now the ranking results have flipped, apparently. So my observation here filtered up to the top and made them change it to avoid criticism, right? ๐Ÿ˜‡

@VulcanTourist @KamalaHarrisWin

Probably their AI sucked up your comment here on Mastodon and consumed 100,000 gallons of water to make the decision to promote the video.

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin

It's a bit weird, though, because they customize search results and Google knows that I'm a man (and probably that I'm married), so it's weird that they put the opposite POV in front of me versus you. AI isn't so brilliant after all....

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin Who'd have thought that women are fully-formed, autonomous beings? Vote for your own self-determination.
@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin Wait till they see the add directed at their best friend
@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin the fact this has to exist sickens me.
@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin be sure to do the youtube algorithm thing -- view it to the end, click the like button, maybe even subscribe to their channel for the next week. Click like on the first few comments you see that don't suck.
@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin Are republicans even human????
@AndrewMettier @mastodonmigration Yes they are. Dehumanization is bad. Itโ€™s important to remember that terrible and evil people are *still people*. Dehumanization is the first step to becoming the terrible and evil person yourself.

@mastodonmigration I love how all the comments are, how dare you imply Republicans are like that, while all the notable Republicans speaking out are proving that they are exactly like that.

@KamalaHarrisWin

@willaful @KamalaHarrisWin

Right?! They are twisting themselves into pretzels. That's what happens when you basically live a dishonest disingenuous existence. Reality trips you up.

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin That country is broken on so many levels, itโ€™s not even funny anymore. Trump will be the final straw to make it a failed state of religious fanatics, probably in civil war with the non-idiotic part of the country.

@mastodonmigration @KamalaHarrisWin

It probably doesn't help that I haven't finished my first morning coffee, but I was just so confused as my brain tried to connect Julia's voice to the lady in the ad, and my brain wasn't having it.. "That's not Julia Roberts, is it??".. I'll go finish my coffee right after I boost this post. ๐Ÿ˜†
