Baristas at my favorite coffee shop are talking about emoting (in a game).

Barista one: "but what does the word (emoting) mean? Does it come from emoticon?"

Barista two: "yeah, I think so."

I want so so bad to "um, actually" them but this is my favorite coffee shop in the entire city and I am trying to pretend to be a Normal Person. I was soo close to doing it too.

(For context, I am sitting at a table and they are behind the counter. I would have to go out of my way to talk to them. I am very clearly Not Invited to the Conversation. )

Because I need to get it out of my system.

Emoting is a word in the dictionary that is older than the internet. It means to express emotion. It is so much more likely that emoticon comes from emoting, but most likely they just have the same root word.
