i've seen new unicode emoji come over as mastodon emojo before they've been properly implemented but i haven't really seen the opposite
i know it's more generally a meme but it's a fun connection for sure!
other candidates listed so far this year are orca, bigfoot, apple core, fight cloud, treasure chest, trombone, and falling debris as well as some work on the multi-person sequences with skin tones
my onion on the matter:

* the alternative listed is making them differently represented, like making wrestlers more of an iconic stick figure and making the people with bunny ears into anthro rabbits
fight cloud is an interesting one. i don't know how that would realistically be implemented and what it would look like
i feel like for that one it would be a difficult sell
apple core might get usage but i think it's not a good option when the consortium is generally limiting the amount of emoji added anyway
i think if it made it this far it's done well thus far but i'm certainly not cheering for it
we won't find out the final decision on those until next year, since emoji 16.0 was just announced last month. i think the slate for emoji 16.0 is really good though
i really don't have any complaints here. i'm curious as to what color different platforms are going to go with for the splatter since it's unspecified. i'm thinking red for blood will be avoided, so maybe blue? i'd love to see green though. give a good slime color
root vegetable is undoubtedly going to stay a type of beet or turnip-type vegetable. it was submitted as beet but renamed to be more general
really the emoji committee has been on fire the past few versions. the number has been kept low intentionally which means that the quality of actual ones added are higher.
like head shaking vertically and horizontally? amazing.
changing the directionality of an emoji with a ZWJ sequence? beautiful
i'm personally going to be a big fan of face with bags under eyes once 16.0 is implemented
i also think the clever uses of ZWJ sequences has really been a boon. did you know that the broken link โ๏ธโ๐ฅ is just chain โ๏ธ and boom ๐ฅ? or phoenic is cardinal+fire, lime is lemon+green, etc
oh, looks like mastodon doesn't support emoji 15.1?

ok, well that hasn't been implemented yet. mastodon should really implement the twemoji fork from the ex-twitter people
should i suggest that myself on github? i don't really want to get involved but really they should change what version of twemoji they use even if they don't fix the emoji picker
i created an issue to suggest the change, idk if you can upvote it or something but i think that mastodon really should fix at least the display by replacing twemoji if they won't update emoji-mart
