Moving back to Jethro Tull in 1970 when they released their third studio album called "Benefit".

Experiments are gone, prog is turned back, straight hard rock is on the menu. Benefit is a very riff heavy motorcycle ride without detours. We are staying on the main road.

And this is exactly my problem with it. It is too smooth for my taste, I was expecting them to lash out a bit more.

Still a very solid album and there is no bad song on it. But it just didn't excite me like "Stand Up"

In 1972 Uriah Heep release their 4th studio album called Demons and Wizards. With Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake joining, the classic #UriahHeep lineup was formed.

On #DemonsAndWizards Heep eventually move to fantasy themed prog rock. The Hammond organ sounds stronger than ever, the newly formed rhythm section shapes their sound significantly.

I saw Rainbow Demon and Easy Livin' live earlier this year, it was an experience of a lifetime.

Some say this is their best album. It definitely is a masterpiece: 4.5/5

From one masterpiece to another. Belive it or not, but I have never listened to Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" in its entirety before. I only knew the title track and Locomotive Breath.

Listening through the whole album for the first time, I noticed that it is a bit back to the roots and gave me strong "This Was" vibes. You know, wandering through the Shire and stuff.

But they kept the heavier guitar sounds and it has to be pointed out that the guitar work by Martin Barre is outstanding! 🎸

Uriah Heep released 5 albums in only 2 years. So far, the first 4 have been great, but what about "The Magician's Birthday", album number 5?

Well, honestly id didn't grab me that much. It is very much on the proggy side, very colourful and mellow, but it lacks drive.

I very much like the title track with the psychodelic parts in the middle.

It is still a good album: 3.5/5

If you ask 10 people about what they think are the best #UriahHeep albums, I bet that nobody would answer with "Sweet Freedom".

But Sweet Freedom is great. On their 6th studio album, released in 1973, Uriah Heep abandon the colourful path of magic and fly into space. This album has edges and corners, it's straight hard rock riffs, a move into a more heavier direction again.

Thick as a Brick is a concept album. Its concept is that it is a parody of a concept album.

The album is actually only one song that is split over two sides of an LP.

Musically, the album consolidates their first 4 albums. They take the best bits and pieces and put them together to this wonderful masterpiece. I think "wonderful" is the word that describes it best.

Now that I covered all the classic Uriah Heep albums, the most interesting path on my journey begins: the one where I don't know anything at all, so everything from now on is completely new to me. Well, except the last 2 albums, but we'll come to that later.

Wonderworld was released in 1974 and Uriah Heep are upping their Hard Rock game. The Hammond organ is very reduced, there are no psychodelic elements. I like it, it's a good album.

When Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick was an ironic concept album the successor "A Passion Play" is a proper concept album where only the title is ironic.

Although.. I am not sure how serious they were with this. "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" is hilarious.

Musically they continue where they left with Thick as a Brick. "quasi prog-rock with complex time-signatures" as Martin Webb described it. I agree.

Here comes the first bummer.

Uriah Heep's 9th studio album "High and Mighty" lacks almost everything that makes Heep's music so good.

It even opens in a weird way with John Watton and Ken Hensley on vocals, instead of their iconic lead singer David Byron. High and Mighty is actually the last album that features David Byron, he was fired because of personal issues.

Ian Anderson was 31 years old when he wrote "Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die" for the Jethro Tull album with the same name in 1976. But this album isn't about him but a fictional ageing rock star.

The album is a concept album, again. It is less proggy and more straight forward rock, almost pop rock at parts. Still a great listen and a great album (again).

Innocent Victim is Uriah Heep's 11th studio album, and according to Wikipedia "The eyes of drummer Lee Kerslake were used for the snake on the cover artwork." 🤔🤔🤔

Fallen Angel is Uriah Heep's 12th studio album in 8 years. It is the last one to feature John Lawton on vocals.

It follows the path they have taken with Innocent Victim: straight forward hard rock/rock 'n' roll. No experiments, no lashing out, no demons and wizards.

The album starts off really good, but soon enough it loses me. The most remarkable thing about this album is the boob on the cover, and even that one is just meh.

Heavy Horses, their 11th studio album is yet another great one. It's #JethroTull boiled down to its core. And I very much like that. 1979 was the first year in 9 years that didn't have at least one album by Uriah Heep. And - spoiler alert - Heep should have waited a bit longer for their 13th studio ablum because: Conquest is bad. Really bad.
It starts off like a classic 80s rock album which is ok, I guess, but then it is... just... disposable?

The new vocalist John Sloman isn't really good, the songwriting is lackluster and the ballads are just cringeworthy.

Back to #UriahHeep who delivered a very disappointing album entering the 1980.

Instead of poorly drawn boobs they opt for adding horns, elven ears and pointy teeth to an ape, paint it red and call the album "Abimong".

They go full Electric Light Orchestra with their album "A".

Ian Anderson discovered the synthisizers and made an electronic rock album. And I say Ian Anderson because this was supposed to be his first solo album, but the label had other plans. (Seventh Star anyone?)

Jethro Tull went to space in 1980 with "A". In 1982 they return to earth but brought the synths with them.

I am a sucker for everything 80s so this album totally hits a sweet spot for me. The synthesizer in combination with the flute... for some reason I had to thinkg about Gwildor from the "Masters of the Universe" movie from 1987. AFAIR a Synthesizer played a major role there as well.

I saw them earlier this year and let me tell you: this dude is amazing!

The album "Raging Silence" not so much, unfortunately. It is by no means bad, but a bit too cheesy at parts (looking at you When the War is Over). There are some good 80s rock moments though. Over the top hair metal is mostly gone.

And then they just blow me away with Sea of Light. Against the Odds might be the most aggressive album opener in Heep's discography.

The guitars are on fire and the energy is high. #UriahHeep never sounded so heavy before!
Yes, there are some few cheesy tracks, but overall, Sea of Light is a banger!

3.5 out of 5, good album!

Do you wann a hear an odd album name? Because the name of Jethro Tull's 18th studio album is quite uniqe.

In 1991 #JethroTull released "Catfish Rising" and with that album, they return to their roots.

Wiki says that "the album continues the hard rock and blues sound of the previous two albums". Honestly I don't hear that. Yes, it is bluesy, but also way more accoustic and folky, it's closer to Songs from the Wood than it is to Rock Island.

But what do I know? 🤷

I know this much:

3,5 out of 5, good album!

A bucket full of grease. This is where Uriah Heep fell into before they started recording their 20th studio album "Sonic Origami".

The album would be good if every second song wasn't a tearjerker. But every second song is a tearjerker. So one half of the album is solid dad rock, the other half underwhelming soft rock.

Sonic Origami is also the last album to feature long time drummer Lee Kerslake who would semi retire from #UriahHeep due to healt issues.

⭐⭐/5, we are deep in "meh" territory.

At this point in my #JethroTull x #UriahHeep journey I can already draw one conclusion: despite their controversial 80s area, Jethro Tull is more consistent when it comes to good quality releases.

"Roots to Branches" is yet another very good album. It pretty much follows the recipe of "Catfish Rising".

And just like Catfish Rising, #RootsToBranches gets a 3.5 out of 5. Good album. Not more, not less.

From the mid 70s to the late 90s Uriah Heep have released 15 studio albums. They have been hit and miss in this period, honestly. Some were good, but a lot were just meh.

From 1998 onwards they took a break from recording albums, but they continued to tour.

In 2008 they came back with "Wake The Sleeper", and what a comeback that was.

Wake The Sleeper is full of energy and power. They sound modern and never boring. I think their new drummer Russell Gilbrook plays a major role in reviving #UriahHeep

⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 great album!

4 years after Roots to Branches Jethro Tull continue their journey with "J-Tull Dot Com". The album was released in 1999 before the Dot-com bubble burst.

Stylewise I'd say it is "classic" #JethroTull, it is a strolling through a park one. You can pick that album up any time, it's a good one:

We're getting closer to the end of this long journey, lassies, lads and lanxes.

Good thing Uriah Heep released another great album after Wake the Sleeper.

Into The Wild (released in 2011) is again very heavy, dancing on the border between hard rock and heavy metal.

This is a no filler album, and I even like the ballads (Trail of Diamonds, Kiss Of Freedom). And it has to be mentioned: Bernie Shaw is in excellent shape.

Well done #UriahHeep

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 great album! 🤘

What do you do on October 29 at 5:30am? Listening to The Jethro Tull Christmas Album, of course!

I expected lots of bells and choral harmonies. But while all of that is there, it is very very reduced.

In fact, as someone who usually doesn't pay attention to lyrics, you barely notice that this is a Christmas themed album at all.

It is a very relaxed folk rock album though, it remided me of Songs from the Wood.

It is a good album and instantly became my favourite Christmas album. I am not sure if I had one before, but now I do, thanks to #JethroTull

10 years ago #UriahHeep released their 23rd studio album "Outsider". That's a lot and you keep wondering, do they have anything left to say?

Yes they do!

Outsider pretty much follows the path of Into the Wild and Wake the Sleeper. But it's a bit of a tamer horse. I like em wild though, so this'll get a 3 out 5 album covers that look like Wetten Dass...? stage designs (Germans will know).

3/5 means: solid, might pick it up again.

After a 19 year hiatus Jethro Tull released The Zealot Gene in 2022. The album was 5 years in the making with a completely new lineup. Some songs of the album don't have a drum track, because a pandemic happened and drummer Scott Hammond was unable to record at home.

But honestly, these songs don't need drums. They are just great.

In their simplicity, the songs on The Zealot Gene wrap you in a warm blanket of cheerful feelings.

I think this album was the first #JethroTull album I listened to in full and I thought that this was a remarkable folk album. My verdict still stands.

⭐ ⭐⭐⭐/5 ...great album!

My wife and I were driving through Sicily in September of 2018 in a red Opel Adam.
I put on Uriah Heeps latest release "Living The Dream" and I was nicely surprised.

By then, I only knew the obvious #UriahHeep songs. But this sounded different, it sounded modern and heavy. But it still had the Hammond organ so it definitely was Uriah Heep.

Living The Dream is basically my go-to album of modern era Heep.

It's great!

#RökFlöte is #JethroTull's latest album. I listened to it when it was released last year and I was quite fond of it. It's less folk and more rock compared to "The Zealot Gene". Last year I rated it "good album" (3.5).

Listening to it again, I have a bit of a problem with it. It's the guitar tracks and partly also the drumming.
They sound very generic and cheap, almost as if they've been bought in a backing tracks shop. There's no life in them, they are just there to support the vocals and the flute.

2.5/5 solid, but I'm probably not gonna pick it up again.

A complete ranking will follow in toot 48.

Uriah Heep's latest album Chaos & Colour was released last year, just like Tull's RökFlöte.
The direct comparison is astounding. While RökFlöte lacks drive due to lackluster guitar and drum works, Heep go all in on this one.

The guitars are on fire, the drums are thrashing and driving, the vocals are top notch! I was privileged to see "Hurricane" from this album earlier this year, and let me thell you: these guys still got it!

Chaos & Colour is a great album and #UriahHeep is very much alive!

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 (upgraded, see edit)

Edit: ah what the hell, this one is even better than ...Very 'Eavy ...Very 'Umble

4.5 out of 5! 👏 🤘

So this is it, I listened to all 23 Jethro Tull albums.

To summarise this journey in short: Jethro Tull kept the quality up and except for Under Wraps, there aren't any bad albums. They even managed to pull off a good Christmas album. And a Dire Straits album.

Although I ranked Aqualung 1st, I think my go-to album would be Songs From The Wood. I just love the folky cozy campfire atmosphere. This is Jethro Tull for me.

So without further ado, here is my final ranking of #JethroTull studio albums:

#JethroTullAlbumsRanked

#JethroHeepJourney 49/50

Summarising my 25 album Uriah Heep journey:

In contrast to Jethro Tull, #UriahHeep did have some bad albums, especially in the late 70s. But they also have extremely high highs, including their latest albums.

They acutally took a very similar path to Saxon, who took their music to more heavy spheres in the mid 2000s.

I was blown away by Look at Yourself and I even put it above Demons and Wizards nor Salisbury and ...Very 'Eavy. The latter has the best Heep song on it (Gypsy), but it isn't as consistent.

So, here is my final Uriah Heep studio album ranking:

#UriahHeepAlbumsRanked

#JethroHeepJourney 50/50

48 albums done in roughly a month.

So, #JethroTull or #UriahHeep?

These journeys definitely make more fun when bands continue to develop and experiment. Both did that but I thought Heep has a bit more to offer here hence I they entertained me a bit better. But this is only valid if you listen to the albums back to back. Individually, #JethroTull has more high quality albums than Heep.

If I had to decide, I'd take: JethroHeep. Because I don't have to decide 😉

With the combined album ranking, my #JethroHeepJourney has come to an end.

Thank you for reading 🤘

#JethroHeepJourney 51/50

A year has passed since this epic journey and I have to update my Jethro Tull ranking.

First of all: Thick as a Brick has to be the #1. I keep coming back to this masterpiece and everytime I fall in love with it more and more

Second: Songs from the Wood needs to go to 2 for similar reasons.

Third: Curious Ruminant was release this year and it was a really good album.

#JethroTull

@derthomas super impressive journey! I’ll have to queue up your top ranked ones
@brh thank you!
Apart from the top tier albums you could pick any 3.5+ album really. And even the 3 star albums are worth checking out. This is a really subjective list and most of the albums I listened to only once.
@derthomas Excellent list, excellent journey!
Which band do you plan next?
@yourfutureex thank you!
A band with fewer albums.
Maybe Opeth.

@derthomas pains me to see This Was and Benefit listed so low, but hurray! big time congratulations for finishing their discography! 🥰

i'm gonna remember your Heep list as well because I just know their 70s output 🙏🏻
