Rather than just targeting Canadians, I found near-identical ads aimed at audiences in the UK, Australia and Hong Kong. The earliest example was from 2022.

And some of the investment platforms tied to these ads have been flagged by authorities in places like Spain and France.

Many experts I spoke to said ad distributors like Google and Meta should be doing more to vet ads.

I reached out to the two companies for comment. Google would not confirm whether ads are vetted prior to going live or only after a viewer reports them. Meta did not respond.
