Trying to build up the courage to call the bank. Tomorrow is the deadline to set up a payment arrangement, or else they will repossess our car. I had really hoped to make this call with the knowledge that I would have a first paycheck coming in in two weeks, but that's still not the case. This last 9 months has been one extended torture session, with no end in sight.

You know it's bad when you have to stop to cry multiple times just to write out the words. Please help us if you can.

We technically have enough to make the payment now, but we'll only have $130 left to live on for IDK how long. I've got major decision paralysis now. Do I save the car and take a gamble on food, or lose the car for sure and be sure we can eat in the near future. I could use some advice.

If it were a sure bet, food would win hands down. But it's harder to judge the tradeoff when it's a gamble like this.

Can you do what you need to do, without a car? Either by using public transport, or by other means. A car, no matter how little you use it, is still a major ongoing expense. If you can't then, I'm afraid you must gamble.

@pathfinder Idk. The kids could probably start riding the bus, but our grown kids depend on the car to get to their jobs, too, and there's nobody else local to lean on. It's a small town so there's no public transportation to speak of. And having no car would remove any chance of taking a job that requires me to commute, as opposed to working remotely. (Remote jobs are harder to come by.)

Sounds like you are stuck with the car, then. Have you thought about using the car as a source of income? Certain jobs, like delivery driving are often available, even if only part time. It could provide at least some respite.

@pathfinder Yeah, I did that before, when I was younger. Delivered pizzas in my car and ruined it to pay for it. But we already let the insurance go because we couldn't afford it. We would have to tack that bill back on, which would mean having money up front to get access to the income, assuming it would be enough to be worthwhile.

@hosford42 @pathfinder Common sense đŸ€Ș indicates that you stand a better chance of paying them ultimately WITH the car, and it’s a pain for them to ‘repossess’ with paperwork etc — ask if you can refinance, or if they can offer a grace period?

Contacting them proactively (keep records!) demonstrates that you’re negotiating in good faith

@jacquiharper @pathfinder Thank you again! Tomorrow was the day the grace period was supposed to be exhausted. I talked to them earlier and they'll *probably* not take it if I make a monthly payment by the 9th. That's my hard deadline. Or they might decide to repossess before then if they feel like it. I'll be calling them back on the 4th, to check in.

@Lironah I don't know how. I'm not even sure what SNAP is, honestly. I tried to get on unemployment but it's a joke here in Texas.

SNAP food benefits are put on to the Lone Star Card and can be used just like a debit card at any store that accepts SNAP.

@hosford42 if you have a service in your area that helps with budgeting, they might be good to talk to. They can't make money magically appear, but they have practice in helping you think through these tough situations. They may be able to put you on to support you don't know about and help you to navigate social security. But mainly, if they're any good at all, they'll be on your side through this.
