Here’s my research and voting process in Oakland. Maybe it’ll help in other parts of California.

I start with the CalMatters voter guide, a non-profit non-partisan news site. In addition to explaining issues, it lists funders and external endorsers of candidates and measures. Some of those grifter groups are easy to flag and vote against.

Here's your 2024 California Voter Guide

What Californians need to know to vote in the November 5 general election.

CalMatters

Often linked at the local level on CalMatters pages, I check out Oaklandside. This is another non-partisan site that isn’t making direct endorsements but covers candidates. They have tons of local interviews.

For endorsements, first, Oaklandside links to a bunch of partisan organizations you can browse off their site.

A friend shared a personal guide from a Berkeley resident with a personal statement and (most) endorsements sounding good to me.

I found a lot to agree with (and some disagreements) from the mysterious “Pete,” also sent from a friend. A lucky internet search identified Pete Woiwode, who seems involved in various community organizing roles. Makes me suspicious to not list your name and details on your own guide, but the extensive good-sounding info makes it seem trustworthy enough for the mix.

I’m also skeptical of group that invokes esteemed Minnesota Senator, Paul Wellstone, for whom I once attended a DFL fish fry. I don’t see anything explaining a direct connection, just that they liked him and Sheila Welllstone. …but I’m aligned with most of the endorsements.

The East Bay DSA endorsements are disappointing their limited scope. But the California DSA has more endorsements to consider.

A few quick and/or hot takes:
As a general rule, fuck these recalls and any candidate aligned with them.
Why am I voting for both legislators and endless ballot measures?
The worst ballot measures ask the populace to direct specific funding.
End prison slavery.
