So @davidmhewitt is a boss and fixed the installer localization! I prepared a few releases this morning and when those are merged I’ll build a new stable ISO and send out an update to sponsors.

Gonna turn my attention back to wrapping up the press release. I need to poke a couple people about availability to pick a release date but I think we have no major blockers now. OS 8 is done*

While I’m waiting for a few branch approvals, maybe this is the way to go for OS Upgrades in the future? https://github.com/elementary/os/issues/724

It seems like systemd-sysupdate and bootc are kind of the most popular atomic update paths here. At least trying to start the conversation so we can finally implement this in a reliable way

Build systemd-sysupdate compatible images · Issue #724 · elementary/os

if we want to use systemd-sysupdate for updates we need to build images that the service can pull and host them somewhere. It probably makes sense to do then as part of the monthly stable build wor...

Got all those release branches approved. Building last 3 packages in launchpad rn. Once those publish, I’ll spin a new RC and send that sponsors update. Home stretch! OS 8 is imminent!
@danirabbit making sure I understand here, this means a potential for not needing to do a fresh install (more or less) for, say, 7.1 -> 8.0 (or at least 8.x -> 9.0)? If so, yes freaking please

@danirabbit I promoted this idea to the KDE folks when they chose to use sysupdate, and I'll promote the same idea to you now: you could build the OS on top of your Flatpak runtime, and thus the freedesktop-sdk! That way, elementary OS, GNOME OS, and (if I can convince them eventually) KDE OS could be a family of distros that are controlled by their associated Desktop projects and share the distro stuff like hardware enablement, security, etc

Just planting an idea :), and happy to discuss

@danirabbit most popular? I don't think they're used by any non-micro distro yet (not even Silverblue) ...
@decathorpe @danirabbit Not even Universal Blue uses it. Nobody is seriously using any of it.
@danirabbit @davidmhewitt congratulations!!! thanks a lot!!! 😍😍😍
@danirabbit @davidmhewitt 🥳🥳🥳 Awesome news. Thank you!!
