“AI” models are suffused with US values and, occasionally, those are quite shocking to us non-Americans

An Icelandic police force used a generated image to promote a public notice

People were absolutely horrified

Why?

Because the cop in the image had a gun, in a holster, AROUND CHILDREN 😱

The uniform was also not accurate for an Icelandic cop but what people found obscene was the idea that anybody would carry a gun around children, even holstered

Lögreglan á Suðurnesjum ætlar að hætta að nota gervigreindarmyndir af lögregluþjónum á Facebook-síðu sinni. Embættið birti gervigreindarmynd af lögregluþjóni, sem virðist vera vopnaður, umkringdum börnum.

@baldur it is so fucking refreshing to hear that attitude toward guns rather than pushing for "more cops in schools"
@TeflonTrout @baldur you have cops IN schools!?

@ferret @TeflonTrout @baldur Quite a few United States schools have cops in them.

They explicitly have "no duty to protect" the students or staff.

They are actually there as PR for the police departments concerned.

Some schools have finally started to end those programs; but only after way too many cases of cops harassing or assaulting students.

(When I was in school decades ago; we had cops on campus. All I ever saw them do was demonstrate how they might plant evidence.)
