“AI” models are suffused with US values and, occasionally, those are quite shocking to us non-Americans

An Icelandic police force used a generated image to promote a public notice

People were absolutely horrified

Why?

Because the cop in the image had a gun, in a holster, AROUND CHILDREN 😱

The uniform was also not accurate for an Icelandic cop but what people found obscene was the idea that anybody would carry a gun around children, even holstered

Lögreglan á Suðurnesjum ætlar að hætta að nota gervigreindarmyndir af lögregluþjónum á Facebook-síðu sinni. Embættið birti gervigreindarmynd af lögregluþjóni, sem virðist vera vopnaður, umkringdum börnum.

For some reasons people feel compelled to point out, both here and on Bluesky, that police carry guns in other countries than the US

As if it's the massive popularity of pictures of German police online that's biasing models made by US companies towards rendering pictures of armed police.

FFS!

@baldur I remember this iconic german police officer with his gun, quite a picture it was

@archiloque I can still hear the theme song 🙂

(Though, discovering later on about him being an SS officer was a shock 😬 And Herbert Reinecker!)

@baldur @archiloque
Are you talking about Derrick? I just read a story about that in the SZ (Süddeutsche Zeitung) today.
