Last night I rode my bike a couple of miles to the grocery. Halfway there I noticed a young college age white girl following me. At a light I turned to look at her and she bolted, turned around and rode off.

When I came out of the grocery the same girl rode up and apparently assumed I didn't recognize her.

White people who act that crazy have almost gotten me killed before, so I smiled, spoke politely, and let her play out her little Karen drama of being so sly and superior as she politely insulted me.

This kind of thing has become routine here in the #SFBA with it mostly being women, though twice this year I've had white men follow and interrogate me, photographing my registration number, absolutely certain my bike must be stolen.

I've searched high and low across these 50 states and sadly the best I've been able to do minding my own damn business is to trigger people enough to act crazy but not enough to get murdered, at least so far.

Just waiting to see how many more Continental and Colonial Europeans embracing whiteness dare to post in my feed the claim you can't understand white supremacy because you are white.

I never get tired of hearing that lie along with how you don't see color.

Don't be shy now that one of your sisters has outed themselves.

Go ahead and get it out of your system.

@muiren my only reaction to this and similar stories is generally “oh why there are (my fellow) (white) people”.

and being an eastern european i understand these are the rules of the american version of white supremacy, but i have no fucking idea how such people think; we don't even share the same language with most of the american whites, much less the common culture.

…and it's not that there's no racism here, of course – the racism we are taught and have in poland is just different (perhaps only slightly less virulent, but certainly less deadly in direct contact).

@muiren WTAF

i have to deal with crazy drivers and other safety hazards, i cannot imagine having to deal with threats from *other cyclists*

as a white woman cyclist, i am so sorry you have to deal with this BS

@muiren I am sorry this happened to you here and sorry that people like me have not done a better job of raising children who know better than to pull that crap.
@muiren That's so infuriating and so scary. I'm glad you were able to manage her, and keep yourself away from the further violence she longed to call upon. I hope you are doing OK.
@muiren I'm genuinely sorry you, or anyone else, has to experience this.

@muiren

Ditto to the other comments here—how terrible for you!
I can’t say I don’t see color, I do. Especially if someone is alone, I may try to make casual conversation to communicate that I’m not a threat.

@muiren I struggle to grasp the situation. What did she actually end up saying to you that was important enough to follow you around? Sorry to be dense here, if it should be obvious.

Edit: I just reread my post and realized it might sound like I don't believe you. That's not the case: I'd be very scared if someone followed me around. It's just that I can't think of any reason why someone would, other than trying to steal your bike once you get off. But she talked to you, so that's not it?

@lizzard @muiren

Karen thinks Muiren stole the bike she's riding.
I see racism creep in a lot in my local stolen bike groups despite the vast majority of thefts being from white tweakers and try to push back when I can.
It can take the form of posting pictures of bipoc riding their bikes to ask the group if anyone is missing the bike, looking for the serial and reporting it to the cops as a "found" bike or making snide "compliments" (intonation matters) then equating defensiveness with guilt.

@Wally @[email protected] I block Europeans who embrace whiteness while claiming they don't understand the culture of white supremacy and the hierarchy built around it.
@Wally @muiren oh. That's... wild. And really scary. And really stupid on behalf of Karen, but that doesn't help Muiren in that moment.
