“Some say 2+2=4. Others we’ve spoken to believe the answer is 5.”

@aral

I simply don't know you well enough to assess whether your position of 2+2=4 is valid.

I've had dinner with somebody opposing this claim, and while you and them would set different paths for math, I am optimistic that either 4 or 5 would be a positive step. I'm endorsing both.

@katzenberger @aral Well, a true mathematician would suggest we just don't know if either is right or wrong without knowing what axioms they are using and what they mean by those symbols. Where all other symbols are the same but '+' means, "sum the operands and increment by 1," 2+2=5 is true and 2+2=4 is false--and false in a way that has a fundamentally broken, even if common, view of math. You will never understand math if you're too rigid to accept that 2+2=4 is false quite often.
