While I've been curled up in my little hole and unable to do much, even play any Promo, I've been watching Downton. I started it once, but they killed off my favorite character which put me right off. This time I've got past that, I'm about to begin season 5. I do love period drama. I have several really good ones and those kind of things are so handy when I need to be majorly distracted.
@lulu_bear Hi Lulu yes I love Downton, but they keep killing off my favourite people, did you ever watch upstairs down stairs. I liked that too, they did do a remake of it.
@DerryLawlor Yes, I have both the original and the remake.
@DerryLawlor @lulu_bear My Nana introduced me to Upstairs, Downstairs at a young age along with many other great British comedy and drama shows. I haven't thought about it until reading this post.
@lulu_bear I agree with you that's how I met #Downton and it became my happy place. One day I needed a distraction and there it was. Who was your favorite that they killed off?
@robini71 Matthew. I really liked him. I do wish actors would stay put in a thing once they've started it!
@lulu_bear Oh me too that was a hard one to take I agree.
@lulu_bear I was so upset when they killed off my favorite character too, but I’m glad I ultimately stuck with it.
@technocounselor Who was y our favorite? Matthew was mine, and I was just devastated when they killed him. This time I knew it was coming so was able to get past it, though it was a near thing.
@lulu_bear Yes, I adored Matthew. I ended up watching his death twice as well, and even though I was ready, it was definitely still hard.
@technocounselor It was slightly easier for me this time, because I knew it was coming, but it was so cruel, the way it happened, I don't think they needed to do that.
@lulu_bear @technocounselor I agree and I never liked her second husband nearly as much. In fact I'm not sure I liked him much at all.
@robini71 @technocounselor Nah, wasn't terribly keen on him myself.
@lulu_bear @robini71 No nor I. But then again, I used to get angry with Mary about five times and episode, especially in earlier seasons.
@technocounselor @lulu_bear I even got angry at her in the last season so you might be better than me
@robini71 @lulu_bear Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. Oh yes when she forced him into giving up racing. Granted it was infinitely more dangerous then than it is now, but he was a grown man. He knew the risks. It should have been his choice.
@technocounselor @robini71 Spoiler alert: What she did to Edith was worse, outing Marigold in front of everyone.
@lulu_bear @technocounselor Agreed that was way worse absolutely.
@lulu_bear @robini71 Oh absolutely. I would’ve never spoken to her again after something like that.
@technocounselor @robini71 It always made me glad that Edith, after everything she'd been through, picked the plum so far as marriages to. I'm glad they both ended up happy, but Edith deserved all the good things she got.
@lulu_bear @technocounselor Yes, I agree. It was so heartbreaking watching Edith be passed over and then left at the altar like that that was horrible.
@robini71 @lulu_bear Oh yes, one of the many times I cried watching the show.
@robini71 @lulu_bear And I get it, given how she lost Matthew that she would have concerns, but still.
@technocounselor @lulu_bear Oh, that wasn’t what bothered me what bothered me was how she treated Edith even in the last season.
@robini71 @lulu_bear Oh yeah she was absolutely awful to Edith. Goodness it’s been so long since I watched it I had almost forgotten about that. Perhaps I should watch it all again.
@technocounselor @robini71 A very good idea indeed! I'm actually getting more out of this first season now I'm not trying to sussout who everyone is and how things work. I'm picking up on nuances I missed.
@lulu_bear @technocounselor Oh yes it is fun in a different way during a repeat visit.
@lulu_bear Do you know one of my favorite moments on what was Twitter back then the Historical advisor to the show actually engaged with me. I asked him for thoughts on scents of the time since one episode featured some spilled perfume. He sadly didn't have thoughts on what it might have been at the time but did offer that the air in the house would have had a lot of starch about and perhaps lavender.
@robini71 Ooh, how very interesting. I think Mary would wear something heavier than lavender though, possibly jasmine based, or, no, I know, I see mary as a Narcisse Noir girl, that was around back then, it was brought out in 1911. I think Edith would have worn something lighter, possibly orange or lemon blossom based, or with mimosa in. I think Sybil would have been lighter still, lily of the valley or honeysuckle. Cora is rose to me, I think she'd always smell of roses. I think Anna might have been a lavender girl.
@lulu_bear Yes, I agree with all of this. Absolutely every word, although perhaps Mary might have also liked. l’heure bleue which I think also came out in 1912 or thereabouts. and of course, lady Violet would’ve had to of loved Violet scents and what about lady Isabel? What do you think she would’ve worn.
@robini71 Oh yes, Mary might have liked l'heurre Bleu. I was trying to think about Siabel, I don't know that she would have worn perfume, at least not at the start. Later maybe, maybe something with gardinia, something that smells of old fashioned garden flowers, nothing too heavy.
@lulu_bear And I really did like Lucy during the last season And Miss Baxter too And Mrs. Hughes bless her. She had no love lost for Mary. That’s for sure. It always made me giggle.
@robini71 I was really worried about Miss Baxter at first, but she turned out great didn't she! I always liked Mrs Hughs, and I'm so glad she married Carson. Poor, poor darling Carson, I felt so sad for him!
@lulu_bear Oh yes, dear sweet Mr. Carson that scene with him and the baby was just the sweetest ever
@robini71 I know! Such a lovely man for all he can be a bit starchy at times, bless him.
@robini71 @technocounselor Spoiler alert: I'm glad it wasn't just me. That really made me sick to my stomach!
@robini71 @technocounselor Hey, I got angry with her in the last season. That trick she played on Edith was perfectly despicable and I'm glad she got called out for it.
@technocounselor @robini71 Hahaha, I feel you! I decided to go right back to the beginning, so she's perfectly insufferable at the moment. to be honest though, I didn't like her much at the best of times. Edith got her absolutely right near the end of six when she told her what for. Ooh, that episode, where she got both barrels from Tom adn Edith, I felt like putting out flags! I did find myself actually cheering out loud and yelling "Tell her!" at nothing in particular!
@lulu_bear @technocounselor Hahahaha yes to all of this. Mary had her moments but not many of them. And I always felt badly for poor Evelyn and Charles I wanted to know that they both ended up happy.
@robini71 @technocounselor Oh yes, me so too, I felt desperately sorry for both of them.
@lulu_bear @robini71 Yes, that was a glorious moment.
@lulu_bear I agree it was completely unnecessary.
