Have been staying in hotels a bit during #Helene, and thinking about housekeepers. For many years we've tipped them each day, as it's another hard, unappreciated job. One time sticks in my mind.

A decade ago we were in MD just outside the District, looking at homes to possibly relocate, been there 4 days. Came back from dinner to find the older housekeeper still in our hallway, working.

As we approached our door, she said "you're checking out tomorrow!" and hugged me. My small tip made that big a difference in her life.

I will never forget this. And so many other folks are in the same situation.

Kindness is everything.

My habit - for most stays of only a couple days or so - is to leave the Do Not Disturb sign outside the door during my entire stay. Then leave a generous tip when I'm leaving.

Same reasons as you, but on top of that...
a. give them less work to do
b. nobody going through my stuff
